Getting ready for summer flights. Tips for flying in the heat.
Ready to take some fun summer flights in a Cirrus? Thankfully, all modern Cirrus aircraft come equipped with AC, but when it comes to flight, temperature can greatly affect flight dynamics and air density. Beyond your typical checklist, there are a few additional considerations when adventuring in the heat.
Flight Performance: The heat will make the air less dense, affecting flight control characteristics as well as engine performance. Due to the decrease in air density, as well as increased heat in the engine bay, be prepared to give it a bit more throttle, and keep in a little more mixture, when taking off or climbing. Performance-wise, turbocharged models will have a slight leg up since they have a compressor feeding the engine more air and therefore more performance.
Hot Starts: Following the proper hot start procedures is critical to ensuring you don’t damage the engine. Our staff is well-equipped to train the proper procedure, which includes adjusting air intake and fuel while starting the engine. Always look in your iFOM!
Flying Dynamics: Be prepared to have a shift in flight feel, in many cases, it may feel like you’re flying higher than you actually are. Also, with increased heat and air currents, you may also experience more turbulence. Be calm, plan your altitudes carefully, and enjoy the trip.
Weather: In other parts of the country, especially in more humid climates, you will also need to prepare for sudden rain or thunderstorms. But luckily for us, it’s usually smooth sailing.
